Wine and Food Pairing
So there is now a 50 shades of Grey Cook Book - and to think I was only planning on telling you what wine to serve with the meal???
There are volumes of books on this subject. Probably a million articles, and lots of websites that address the art of Food and Wine and how they should be served together. I will try to provide some basic information on the topic, give you my two cents along the way and the hopefully point you to a few sites that can provide a lot more information than I ever could on food and wine pairings. I will also try to update this page when I find a pairing I really love and or when I find a recipe that works really well with wine in it or with it.
My main issue with giving advice on this subject is that the general rule of thumb is whites with whites and reds with reds. That would mean a Chardonnay with a roast chicken or a Merlot with a T-bone. This works if you like White Wine. I think we all know that I really don't care for Whites but I do love chicken so in my little corner of the world a Pinot Noir is a better option with chicken any day of the week. I think it is important to pair the wines you like with the food you like and not try to fit someone elses idea of what needs to be served. Now if you are trying to entertain guests then yes you probably should stick to the white/white red/red rule unless you know that your guest prefer whites over reds or vice versa.
The other concern I have about offering advice in the food pairing world is that while I agree that you should not drink the same wine with dessert that you had with your meal, I do not agree that each course needs its own bottle. That just seems silly or wastefull to me. I mean if you have a ton of money and can open lots of bottles and just let them sit around then go for it. I heard someone say that people who don't open a bottle with each course can't appreciate what they are drinking and what they are eating. I fully appreciate each sip and each bite, but moma didn't raise no fool......this girl is not running through three - five bottles on a nice meal.
Now what I can tell you is I found an awesome web site for food and wine pairings that lets you select either the main dish or the wine and then will pair for you. The thing I like best about this site is that it offers both a White Wine and Red Wine option for each dish. I put the link to the site below and it will open in a new window for you.
