The Rating System
Let me explain my rating system, which by the way is genius! Most people like to use stars, medals or points. That is just silly do you care if a wine got an 87, what the heck does that even mean? (Actually, the scale goes from 50 - 100 with points for color, appearance, aroma, bouquet, flavor, and overall quality.....Really - bouquet?!?!?!) Do you care if a wine got three medals? Did anyone care about those four out of five dentists? No!!! So I came up with quite possible the best raiting system ever! 1st Bottle, 2nd Bottle, 3rd Bottle, and Do Not Open. By the way that fourth group hardly ever gets used. A wine with a 1st bottle ranking is something super yummy. Something you would want to start the evening with, or bring out to impress the in-laws etc. 2nd bottle status is still very good, but probably a little bit cheaper, maybe something you server with hordorves for the holidays. Something you share after you've had the 1st bottle. then there is 3rd bottle status. A lot of wine makers may take offense to this, but it's not a bad thing at all. Actually this is probably where wine makers make the big bucks. These are the wines that you drink while you're playing pool or poker. These are the ones that you open to have a great time with friends without breaking the bank. This category is near and dear to me. People may never admit that they open a 3rd bottle amongst friends, but I have embraced it! It is true - most people drink a lot of wine when friends are over, it's ok, it happens! You want a great tasting wine to start off the night, but by the end you are not going to be swirling and sniffing - at least not your glass!
